The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships 2019 (world championship of champagne and sparkling wines) claims to be «the most respected, thorough and rigorous international competition in the sector world. At each stage of the contest, the judges work blindly, without seeing bottles or labels, with glasses identified before being served. From there, on Thursdays they choose the best in each category, by region and country. Each judge (three experts work exclusively in the process, Tom Stevenson, Essi Avellan and Tony Jordan) evaluates the wines individually, writes a tasting note and gives a score. Finally, in the sixth stage of the contest, all national champions compete for the World Champion.

In this year’s classification there are several sparkling Spaniards who have won the silver or gold medal, the highest distinction. These are the chosen ones.

-Edoné 2016 Cuvée de María. Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha. 100% Chardonnay.

-Maset 2015 Brut Nature Gran Reserva. DO Cava. 40% Macabeo, 30% Parellada, 30% Xarel-lo (1.3g RS).

-U Month U Fan Three NV Cygnus Brut Rosé. Alt Penedès, DOCava. 85% Grenache, 15% Pinot Noir (8g RS).

-Vilarnau NV Rosé Delicat Brut Organic Reserve. DO Cava. Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. 85% Grenache, 15% Pinot Noir (8g RS).

-U Month U Fan Three NV Cygnus Brut Nature. Alt Penedès. DO Cava. 30% Macabeo, 35% Xarel-lo, 35% Parellada (2.7g RS).

-Waitrose NV Brut Castillo Perelada. Penedès DO Cava. 50% Parellada, 25% Xarel-lo, 25% Macabeo (8g RS).


-Gramona 2012 Iii Lustros. Corpinnat, Penedes. 75% Xarel-lo, 25% Macabeo (1.4g RS).

-Gramona 2009 Celler Batlle. Corpinnat, Penedès. 65% Xarel-lo, 35% Macabeo (6g RS).
